Can We Revive Trust in Civic Institutions?

Can We Revive Trust in Civic Institutions?

JUNE 25, 4-6 pm
733 SW Oak St., Collaboration Gym (2nd floor)

What are we doing?
We’ll listen to a briefing from members Lee van der Voo and Amaury Vogel about recent research that explores Oregonians’ perspectives on trust in civic institutions. After that, we'll discuss what this information means for us as leaders in convening roles in community, philanthropy, business, government and other sectors.

Lee (she/her) is the co-founder of Oregon News Exploration and Amaury (she/her) is the Executive Director of Oregon Values and Beliefs Center.

What do our hosts have to say about it?
“After some hefty listening work, we can draw a pretty straight line between declining access to relevant, fact-based information and Oregonians' lack of trust in civic institutions. When we gave people a mock news article and asked them if they trusted what civic leaders' said, fewer than a third believed city and county leaders told the truth much or most of the time. Nonprofit leaders fared better, but fewer than half of Oregonians think they tell the truth. Corporations and developers fared much worse.”

What to expect in our space

  • Hospitality We’ll have tasty snacks and beverages. There is always a little time for socializing at the beginning of the meeting — and we encourage you to stay afterwards to catch up with friends and colleagues or foster new relationships.

  • Accessibility The Public Will Building is ADA accessible for those with mobility needs. If need additional accommodation, please let us know so we can ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience for you.

  • A Private Space to Learn The Chatham House Rule helps create a trusted environment to understand and resolve complex problems. Its guiding spirit is: Share the information you receive, but do not reveal the identity of who said it.

  • No Guests, Please We’re investing in building trusting relationships and problem solving dynamics among ~150 civic leaders who connect with the broader community through their roles in government, philanthropy, business, community advocacy, media, and the arts. As get started, we’re trying to keep the space small to give new relationships the best chance of emerging and forming.

  • Space to Work If you need work space before 4 pm for that end-of-day Zoom call or tight deadline, just let us know! There is often a comfortable place to work or meet available.
